Topic:- Local governments are using unapproved and wrong Insecticides to control the vector diseases.

The local civic bodies have been using inappropriate insecticides for spraying and fogging purposes.

• Even though the Insecticides they are using are approved neither by the state health department or National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme. ( NVBDCP).

The NVBDCP approves only four Insecticides:-

• Pyrethrum extract.
• Cyphenothrin.
• Malathion etc.

Also, 6 larvicides and 7 indoor residual spray chemicals have been approved.

• The experts thoroughly test the Insecticides and then allow their use based on the suitability of the Insecticides for Indian Conditions.

But the local governments have been using many unapproved insecticides such as:-

• Deltamethrin 1.25% ULB.
• Cyfluthrin 5%.EW.
• Imidecloprid 0.5% etc.

• Punjab witnessed around 15000 cases of Dengue last year.
• Also, around 1100 cases of Malaria and 5000 cases of Dengue have already been reported in the state this year.
• On average, around 14000 cases are being reported in the state from the last 4 years.
• Majority of such cases are being reported in the months of October and November.

The solutions could be:-

• Central Insecticides board of India should play a proactive role in the management of the Insecticides.
• Besides, The Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine and Storage should also step up in this
• Local governments should responsibly use the Insecticides, the ones which are approved.
