Editorial on rise in Dengue cases in Ludhiana.

 

 Ludhiana holds the dubious distinction of recording the maximum dengue cases this year(2019).

 

  • Around 8956 cases have been recorded this year in Punjab.
  • In 2017, more than 14000 cases were recorded across the state.

 

 Health experts have lamented that all four strains of Dengue are present in the state of Punjab. These strains are:-

  1. DENV-1
  2. DENV-2
  3. DENV-3
  4. DENV-4.

 

  • It is being said by the experts that herd immunity can be developed against all the four strains of Dengue in the course of 3 to 5 years.
  • Though, a significant drop in dengue cases has been seen.( Around 39-35%).
  • Ludhiana has recorded around 1286 cases of dengue this year, which is a great increase in the region.
  • Gurdaspur has also witnessed an increase in the number of dengue cases.

 

About Dengue:-

  • Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection.
  • Dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Ae. albopictus.
  • Dengue is caused by a virus of the Flaviviridae family.
