  • News:- Jallianwala Bagh watershed moment in the freedom struggle.
  • ‘Martyrdom to Freedom: 100 Years of Jallianwala Bagh’
                           (Important for Prelims and Mains).

What is watershed movement?

  • A watershed moment is a turning point, the exact moment that changes the direction of an activity or situation. A watershed moment is a dividing point, from which things will never be the same.

About Jallianwala Bagh incident:-

  • Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, also called Massacre of Amritsar, incident on April 13, 1919, in which British troops fired on a large crowd of unarmed Indians in an open space known as the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar in the Punjab region of India, killing several hundred people and wounding many hundreds more.
  • It acted as a turning point in India’s modern history, in that it left a permanent scar on Indo-British relations and was the prelude to Mahatma Gandhi’s full commitment to the cause of Indian nationalism and independence from Britain.

Causes:-

  • During World War I (1914–18) the British government of India enacted a series of repressive emergency powers that were framed to combat subversive activities.

Example:-

Rowlatt act:

  • The Act is passed in Central legislative assembly, despite every Indian member is against the act. Drafted by Sidney Rowlatt.
  • The Act gave the power of imprisoning anyone without proof of conviction and there would be no trial on the arrested person.
  • Thus it stopped the Habeas corpus right which is the basic right of civil liberties in Britain.
  • As a protest to act, Gandhiji started Rowlatt satyagraha.
  • In fact, Rowlatt satyagraha is the first mass movement of Gandhiji in India.
  • As Rowlatt satyagraha caused a wide dissent to British rule, they widely misused the provisions of sedition, muzzling of press and arrest of popular leaders. Some of the places became violent especially Punjab.
  •  By the war’s end, expectations were high among the Indian populace that those measures would be removed and that India would be given more political autonomy.
  • Instead, however, the government of India passed what became known as the Rowlatt Acts in early 1919, which essentially extended the repressive wartime measures.
  • The acts were met by widespread anger and discontent among Indians, notably in the Punjab region.
  • On the afternoon of April 13, a crowd of at least 10,000 men, women, and children gathered against the arrest of the two nationalist leaders, Satya Pal and Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew.in the Jallianwala Bagh, which was nearly completely enclosed by walls and had only one exit. Suddenly, a British military officer, General Dyer, entered the park with his troops.

How did Jallianwala Bagh act as a watershed movement?

  • The government set up Hunter commission to look into Punjab wrongs. Hunter commission proved only to be an eyewash and non-satisfactory.
  • In a move to address the Punjab wrongs, Gandhiji started Non-cooperation movement in cooperation with Khilafat movement.

  Rowlatt act—-→JBM—–→Non-Cooperation movement.
