News:- Punjab to canalise its rivers with technical support from World Bank, ADB.

 

Context:-

  • Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday announced that his government would canalise all the rivers of the state, taking technical support from World Bank (WB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB).

 

About World Bank:-

The World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans and grants to the governments of poorer countries for the purpose of pursuing capital projects. It comprises two institutions: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the International Development Association.

What is Channelization of rivers?

  • Channelization is a method of river engineering that widens or deepens rivers to increase the capacity for flow volume at specific sections of the river. As a result, during flood times watercourses can move more efficiently and facilitate more water, which results in less damage to banks.

  • Haryana’s Vita Dairy and Punjab’s Verka Dairy has been approached for making provision of the same.

 

Context:-

  • Approximately 50,000 meals are prepared and supplied in schools daily, which are taken by about 70,000 students because a substantial number of students are from affluent families and carry their own tiffin. Thus, the coverage of children under the Midday Meal Scheme in UT(Chandigarh) is about 48%-50%.

 

Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD):-

  •  HRD Ministry urged for the inclusion of milk and milk products from cooperative milk unions/federation through school network under the Midday Meal programme.
  • To ensure better nutritional values in school children.

 

Punjab & Haryana High Court directive:-

  • Earlier in January, the Punjab and Haryana High Court prescribed the substitution of midday meal with wholesome food, including bread, butter, jam and eggs to better the nutritional standing of school-going children.
  • The High Court directed Punjab and Haryana, along with Chandigarh, to complete the process of launching beneficiary schemes or instructions online in all educational institutions.
  • “The children and lactating mothers can be given a meal, bread, butter, jam, eggs daily as a wholesome meal,” Justice Ritu Bahri had said.
