Topic: Education.

News:- Punjab School Education Board ( PSEB) amends the passing criterion.

  • Students now are supposed to bag a total of 33% marks ( both in theory and practical). It would also include Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation ( CCE) system
  • 20% of marks would have to be obtained from both the practicals and theory part ( separately).
  • The purpose of this measure is to increase the pass percentage of the students.
  • But, the real point is the actual level of education and quality of learning.
  •  ASER survey and other parameters reveal the poor learning levels of children in India.
  • Besides, in an age where instant gratification and social media glitter is common, the right approach for education is required.
  • Moral and value education should also be inculcated so that brotherhood, tolerance and harmony could be built in the society.
  • Besides, a practical test of 10 marks shall also be conducted to check the listening and speaking skills of the students.

Topic: Security and Gun laws in the country.

News:- Security blues for gun-loving Punjab.

  • The contemporary songs and movies clearly show the preference of Punjabi youth to an extent.
  • The craze for big cars, bullets, swanky lifestyle etc is well known about Punjab.
  • But, Gun culture is also a sad corollary of this flaunty culture.
  • The border district of Ferozepur has the maximum number of gun license holders.
  • According to sources, Ferozepur district has 21,221 license holders of guns. These holders possess more than 22000 weapons ( in totality).
  • The number of people applying for arms licenses is also increasing.
  • More than 1200 license holders own 2  or more weapons.
  •  Zira, a subdivision of Ferozepur district of Punjab has the highest number of arms license holders. ( 3708 license holders own more than 3900 weapons).
  • Guruharsahai, a subdivision of Ferozepur, has 2289 license holders with 2374 weapons.
  • This huge number of license holders in a border district has raised some eyebrows as cross border crime activities are also a concern.
  • The gun-toting youngsters, especially during marriage celebrations, have become a common sight in Punjab.
  • The drugs culture and gangsters presence make such things more of a threat.
  • Also, another concern is the issue of fake licenses.
  • In July  2010, a case of issuance of fake licenses came to the fore, whereby the signatures of Additional District Magistrate were being forged.

So, besides the issue of licenses:-

  • The rise of gun culture ( owing to the influence of movies and songs) should be dealt with sternly.
  • Police reforms, in general, should be improved so that law and order could be improved.
  • Ethics in Society should be emphasized. Non-violence has always been the mainstay of our country.
