News:-Moga bags first rank in rural sanitation in the national level Swachhata Darpan Rural Rankings 2019.
- The national-level study was conducted under the aegis of Swachh Bharat Mission.
The three parameters of the study are:-
- Open Defecation Free ( ODF ) status. ( 60@% weightage).
- Information, Communication, Education and Capacity Building ( IEC).{ 20% weightage}.
- Solid and Liquid Waste Management ( SLWM).{20% weightage}.
- The survey was done in all 698 districts of the country and 17,475 villages of 34 states and UTs of the country.
- The survey was conducted at 87000 public places which included panchayats, Anganwadis, primary health centres, marketplaces etc.
The ranks were given on the basis of:-
- Feedback from people
- Observation results by independent assessors and Other factors.
- The rural area of Moga district of Punjab has got the joint first rank in the study conducted nationally along with 7 other districts. ( It scored 100 out of 100 points on the three parameters).
- Mohali’ s rural area got the second rank in the study ( with a score of 99.83).
Other areas of Punjab were also assessed in the study:-
Fatehgarh Sahib ( 48th rank).
Barnala ( 145th rank).
Tarn Taran ( 199th rank).
Ludhiana ( 210th rank).
Faridkot ( 231st rank).
Districts such as Pathankot, Muktsar and Gurdaspur did not perform that well in the study.
Some of the laggard districts of Punjab as per the survey are :-
Pathankot ( 576th rank).
Muktsar ( 547th rank).
Gurdaspur ( 529 th rank).
Sangrur ( 518th rank).
Ferozepur ( 510th rank).
The scores to the areas were provided on the basis of:-
- Community toilets.
- Negative marks for dysfunctional toilets.
- Community pits.
- Soak pits.
- Information and educational drives in the area
Also, such surveys are meant not only to improve the physical infrastructure for promoting Sanitation and hygiene, but also the behavioural aspect associated with their usage.

News:-Kerala secures the first rank in the SDG India index 2019 and Bihar the last rank.
- The Sustainable development Goals India index 2019 was released by Niti Aayog.
- Kerala has achieved the best rank in this index among the states. ( Score of 70).
- Himachal Pradesh got the second rank.
- Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu secured the third rank jointly.
- Bihar, Jharkhand and Arunachal Pradesh are the worst performers as per the index.
- Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim and Odisha have shown the maximum improvements this year.
- Chandigarh has maintained its top spot among the UTs. ( Score of 70).
- Southern states have done well in health ( in general).
- India’s composite score has also improved from 57 in 2018 to 60 in 2019. ( Especially in water and sanitation, industry and innovation).
- Even though improvements in nutrition and gender are still to be made.
