News:-Desi cows population sees an increase in Punjab

20th Livestock Census was conducted recently.
It has provided the data that the total population of cows in the state is 25.31 lakh.
4.25 lakh of them are desi cows. (17 % of the total).
The 15% increase in the population of desi cows has been witnessed since 2012.

In Fazilka, Sahiwal breed is the most popular.

Sahiwal is a breed of Zebu cattle which primarily is used in dairy production.
The name Sahiwal originates from the Sahiwal district of Punjab province in Pakistan and is found in Sahiwal in Pakistan, Ferozpur, Amritsar and Sri Ganganagar in India.
Sahiwal produces 9 – 10 litre of milk every day, but the yield may go up to 30 – 32 litre.
There are only 40000 pure breeds Sahiwal cows in Punjab.
The count of desi cows has gone down in the country though.
A 26% decline in desi cows has been observed since 1992.
The government of India has been pursuing the Embryo Transfer Technology project in GADVASU and Animal Husbandry Department.
GADVASU is a veterinary University in Ludhiana , Punjab.
Although Punjab has been promoting exotic breeds of cows such as Holstein Friesian, Jersey etc, Sahiwal breed has also become popular in the last 10 years.

News:-The OPD services centre inaugurated in AIIMS centre at Bathinda.

OPD means an Out Patient Department of a hospital. It is the section of the hospital where patients are provided medical consultations and other allied services.
The institute would provide services not only to Punjab but also nearby states such As Haryana and Rajasthan.
The Union government is planning to set up 22 such institutions in the country.
