News:-Turkey to showcase the valour and military acumen displayed by the Indian soldiers during World War 1.
- During the World war 1, Britain and other allied powers were up against the Ottoman Empire and other powers such as Germany and Austria – Hungary.
- So, during a campaign at Gallipoli in Turkey, Indian soldiers had participated on behalf of the British against the Ottoman Empire.
- The battle is also known as the Dardanelles campaign or the Battle of Canakkale.
The battle of Gallipoli:-
- It was a campaign of the First World War that took place on the Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in modern Turkey), from 17 February 1915 to 9 January 1916.
- The Entente powers, Britain, France and the Russian Empire, sought to weaken the Ottoman Empire, one of the Central Powers, by taking control of the straits that provided a supply route to Russia.
- In January 1916, after eight months’ fighting, with approximately 250,000 casualties on each side, the land campaign was abandoned and the invasion force withdrew.
- It was a great defeat for the allied powers and it aroused the confidence among the nationalist Turks.
- So, later on, Turkey under Mustafa Kamal Pasha went on to organise a nationalist Young Turks movement.
- And later on, the Republic of Turkey was formed.
Indian contribution:-
- Over 15000 soldiers had participated in this battle.
- The Indian soldiers included Sikhs, Dogras, Gurkhas, Muslims etc.
- Around 1600 Indian soldiers had laid down their lives and more than 3500 were wounded.
- Though the allies had tasted defeat, the 29 th Indian brigade was applauded for the resolute actions and bravery.
- The British Commander, General Hamilton has also praised the sheer grit, discipline and courage of the Indian soldiers.
The recent developments:-
- After Indian authorities held discussions with the Turkish authorities, it has been decided that many fabricated replicas of uniforms, weapons etc would be sent by the Directorate of Defence Services Welfare ( the nodal agency taking care of the defence provisions) to Turkey for their display in the museum.
So, now the efforts and bravery of Indian soldiers would adorn the museums of Turkey as well.

News:-PEDA(Punjab Energy Development Agency) concludes Energy Conservation Week:-
- The Energy Conservation week is celebrated from 14th December to 20th December.
- Energy Conservation Day is celebrated on 14th December.
- This day is being observed and celebrated since 1991.
- Bureau of Energy Efficiency is the nodal body for guiding and monitoring its affairs.
- Punjab Energy Development Agency ( PEDA) is the state-designated Agency for observing the week.
- PEDA also implements the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.
