News:- In the last 10 years, the state saw a 30% growth in foreign tourists.
Context:-The state has seen a phenomenal CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of nearly 30 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals and 27 per cent in domestic tourist arrivals over the period 2009-18.
Most visited Place:-
- Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar, was awarded the most-visited religious place in the world by the World Book of Records (WBR).
Vikas Pratap, Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture, said that Punjab witnessed the arrival of 1.2 million foreign tourists and 44.5 million domestic tourists in 2018.
Why?
- Because Punjab is known for its rich religious places, cultural heritage, traditional fairs and festivals, museums, memorials, cuisines, art and craft, farms and eco-tourism.

News:-In first, climate-sustainable agriculture on the agenda
Context:-For the first time, climate sustainable agriculture was the focus of policymakers, agriculturists, agriculture scientists and the agro-industry in Punjab, rather than just value addition or increasing farmers’ incomes.
Important:-
“Agri and Food Processing: Value Addition to Agri Economy” during the second day of Progressive Punjab Investors Summit, they underlined the need to have climate sustainable agriculture as climate change crisis looms large, threatening the production of food.
How?
- Traceability of seeds; use of artificial intelligence; reducing the use of chemicals and switching to natural farming techniques; and increasing rotational crops.
One cause of Climate crisis:-
- Huge ecological and environmental problems are emerging because of stubble burning of paddy and due to extensive use of water for paddy cultivation.
- “Because of climate change, climate-resilient agriculture is the next big challenge and a big business opportunity which the industry can leverage,” said eminent agriculture scientist Prabhakar Rao.
What is Climate Resilient Agriculture?
- Climate Resilient Agriculture can be defined as ‘agriculture that reduces poverty and hunger in the face of climate. change, improving the resources it depends on for the future.
