What is the news?
- Joint farming boon for landless Dalits.
- Joint farming being undertaken by Dalit landless families in various village on reserved village common land has helped many families in not only getting required wheat for consumption, but also reaping dividends. These families have taken reserved land on annual lease by contributing money from their pocket.
- At least 188 landless Dalits have taken 93 acres of reserved land jointly on annual lease. Each family gets five quintal wheat, while remaining crop is sold and profits shared. Avtar Singh, Member, Balad Kalan Panchayat

Topic: Set Target Increase Sugarcane Yield

What is the news?
- Punjab Co-operation and Finance Minister Mr. Harpal Singh Cheema said that the state government has set a target to enhance sugarcane yield to 100 quintals per acre in coming two years.
The initiative has taken towards this:
1) Punjab Government had constituted a task force to chalk out a plan to increase the income of sugarcane growers by enhancing sugarcane yield. He said that this task force includes representatives from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore and national level sugarcane experts besides Sugarfed, Punjab officials.
2) The State government has fixed a target for the next two years to increase the sugarcane yield by at least 100 quintals per acre which would increase the income per acre by about Rs. 36,000.”
3) The government would provide improved sugarcane seeds to the sugarcane growers besides imparting knowledge on modern techniques in sugarcane cultivation.
4) Minister directed the Cooperative Sugar Mills to provide about 30 lakh high yielding varieties of sugarcane seeds to the farmers in collaboration with Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana and Karnal Center of Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

Appealed to adopt the technology at a large scale. The Chief Minister told representatives of Farmer Unions that farmers will be encouraged to plant basmati at ground level because this crop also gives a good price as well as less water consumption compared to paddy.
