What is the news?
- The total collection of the State GST by the Government last December was Rs 1,067.21 crore, compared to Rs 1,009.03 crore in December 2019, an increase of 5.77%.
- In addition to the GST, the State collects tax revenues from the Value Added Tax (VAT) and Central Sales Tax (CST) systems.
- The major contributors to the VAT and CST collection are alcohol for human consumption and five petroleum products that are not subject to the GST.
What is State GST?
- The state GST, as it is called, is a means of collecting taxes for the state government.
- It is collected as a separate tax in the case of intrastate transactions. As with the CGST, it is charged for all sales, purchases and other transactions not exempt under the GST Act.

What is the news?
- Nearly 50,000 Dalit students are suffering from the ongoing impasse between the Punjab government and private colleges over the unavailability of post-graduate scholarship funds.
- Many students have not got their degrees for the past over three years. Agitated over the delay, about 60 students of the local CT Institute allegedly locked the campus yesterday and burnt photographs displayed in the reception area. The management admitted that it had withheld 1,100 degrees since 2017 as Rs 39 crore was due towards SC students.
- The Joint Association of Colleges (JAC), which represents 1650 colleges in Punjab, has openly told Dalit students to cancel dues to obtain their degrees.
