What is the news?

  • 16% rain deficit in Himachal Pradesh.

 

What is Rain Deficit?

  • ‘Deficit rainfall’ is when it drops below the margin of 10 per cent of the average.

 

What is Normal Monsoon and Excess Rainfall?

  • Imd’s definition of ‘normal’. The department calls a monsoon season normal when the total amount of rainfall in the country between June and September is within 10 per cent (plus or minus) of the average rain over a long period.
  • Excess rainfall is when it exceeds the average by more than 10 per cent. For example, there could be intense rainfall in the Northeast and low rainfall in central India. The national average rainfall would reflect as normal.

 

Districts received excess rainfall:-

  • Bilaspur, Kullu districts received excess rainfall.
  • The hill state has received one per cent excess rainfall in August, though the deficit during the current monsoon season from June 1 to August 31 is 16 per cent. The total average rainfall received is 535.7 mm against the normal of 635.8 mm (-16 per cent).

 

Causes:-

  • It is because firstly, they have little humidity; and secondly, due to anticyclonic circulation on land, the possibility of rainfall from them reduces. So, most parts of India do not have rainfall in the winter season.

What is the news?

  • Rs 2.5-cr scholarship for research in the UK to Manali Girl.

 

Why important?

  • Jaya Sagar of Manali is the only student from Asia who has made it to the top 10 in the world among more than 400 applicants. She will be leaving for the UK on September 8.

 

Where she will go?

  • She will go to the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, for postgraduate research and all expenses for this four-year programme will be borne by the Zutshi-Smith scholarship, the amount of which will be more than Rs 2.5 crore.

 

The topic for research:-

  • PhD in quantum computing.

 

What is Quantum computing?

  • Quantum computing is an area of computing focused on developing computer technology based on the principles of quantum theory, which explains the behaviour of energy and material on the atomic and subatomic levels. Classical computers that we use today can only encode information in bits that take the value of 1 or 0.

What is the news?

  • Dr Savita appointed as Head of the Forest department.
  • Dr Savita Sharma, Principal Chief Conservator Forest (Wildlife), has been appointed Head of Forest (HoF) with the incumbent Ajay Kumar retiring today.

 

Why important?

  • Savita is the first woman Director of the institute.
  • She was also the first woman Deputy Director-General in the 25 years of the history of the Indian Council Forest Research and Education.

  • Writer Ganga Ram Raji honoured in Mandi.

 

Why?

  • Writer Ganga Ram Raji was honoured for his novel.

 

What is the name of the Novel?

  • Raji wrote a novel ‘Sindh Ka Gandhi’ on the life of freedom fighter Swami Krishna Nand and Rani Khair Gari, who took part in the freedom movement.

 

Who organised?

  • The function was organised by the Pratibha Pushap foundation.
