News:-Malang villagers clear 7-km link road of snow.
Challenges:-
- Due to lack of road connectivity, villagers face problems in reaching the district headquarters Keylong during the winter season. The situation becomes difficult when someone falls sick. It becomes difficult for us to transport the patient to district hospital Keylong in time.
Location of Malang village:-
- Malang is a small Village/hamlet in Lahul Tehsil in Lahul And Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh State, India. It comes under Malang Panchayath. It is located 13 KM towards East from District head quarters Keylong. 182 KM from State capital Shimla.

News:-Binwa turns river of garbage at Baijnath.
- The Baijnath Municipal Council and the temple authorities are dumping garbage in the Binwa river.
- The river is a major source of drinking water in the lower areas of Baijnath and Paprola but has become highly polluted.
About Binwa river:-
- Binwa, a tributary of the Beas passing through Baijnath, in violation of the guidelines of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

News:-Himachal to increase green cover with public help.
- The state government has set up a target of increasing the forest area up to 30 per cent by 2030. It seeks to achieve this goal through various initiatives to make it a public movement.
2019 Reports:-
- According to a press release, in 2019, with the help of 1,18,932 people, 26,47,146 saplings were planted in a five-day-long campaign.
- The Forest Survey of India, 2019, says the green cover area which was 15,100 sq km in 2017 increased to 15433.52 sq km in 2019.
- The increase has also been reported in very dense, moderately dense and open forest areas. The moderately dense forest area, which was 6,705 sq km in 2017, has increased to 7,125.93 sq km in 2019. Similarly, between 2017 and 2019, the dense forest area of the state has increased from 3,110 sq km to 3,112.71 sq km, the release stated.
New Initiatives:-
- In order to connect the forest enhancement with livelihood, the ‘HP Forest Eco System Management and Livelihood Improvement’ project of Rs 800 crore, funded by JICA, has been started in six districts — Kullu, Mandi, Lahaul-Spiti, Bilaspur, Shimla and Kinnaur.
- In addition, the HP Forest Ecosystem Climate Proofing Project of Rs 310 crore is being implemented in the districts of Kangra and Chamba in collaboration with the German Government and the German Development Bank (KFW).
- The Forest Department has started Vidyarthi Van Mitra Yojana, under which the plots in forest lands have been allotted to them for plantation of useful plants. Similarly, the ‘Van Samruddhi Jan Samridhi Yojana’ has also been started. Under this scheme, people will be provided processing, value addition and marketing at the local level by collecting herbs from rural forests.
- The state government has also launched the Samudayik Van Samvardhan Yojna to ensure participation of Yuvak and Mahila Mandals in forestry activities. Under “Ek Buta Beti Ke Naam”, about 11,50,000 saplings are projected to be planted in the next five years, for which Rs 28.75 crore will be spent.
