What is the news?

  • Five police officials from the state were felicitated with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Police Medal for Meritorious Service on Republic Day.

 

Who received?

  • Satwant Atwal Trivedi, ADGP, State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (SV & ACB), Shimla, has been awarded the President’s Police Medal for distinguished service.
  • Four police officers have been selected for the Police Medal for Meritorious Service: Rahul Sharma, Deputy SP, Forensic Science Laboratory, Junga; Jitender Singh, Assistant Commandant, 1st HPAP (HP Armed Police) Battalion, Junga, Shimla; Sub-Inspector Inder Dutt, 1st HPAP Battalion, Junga; and Head Constable Susheel Kumar, (SV & ACB), Shimla.

 

About President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM):

  • President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM) is awarded for special distinguished record in Police Service and Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM) is awarded for the valuable service characterized by resource and devotion to duty.

What is the news?

  • The Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) marked the beginning of various infrastructure-related construction activities for the Sunni Dam Hydroelectric Project.

What will be its capacity?

  • 382 MW

About the project:

  • It is a run-of-the-river development that is proposed to harness the hydel potential of the Satluj River.
  • It aims to provide a variety of benefits to local suppliers, local businesses, and MSMEs.
  • It is part of the Luhri project, which consists of three hydropower dams.

Luhri Stage-I (210 MW),
Luhri Stage-II (163 MW), and
Sunni dam (382 MW).

  • It will be governed by Indus water Treaty signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 because the project lies in Satluj basin, which is a part of Indus Basin.

 

Benefits:

  • Annual carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by 1.1 million tonnes.
  • Encourage opportunities for entrepreneurship.
  • Encourage regional employment and socioeconomic development.
  • Assist in meeting peak electricity demand and reducing the Northern Region’s growing energy deficit.
