About Naggar Village:
1) Naggar is an old town in the Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh, and has an undoubted mystical appeal. Its attraction can be attributed to the majestic deodars that line the landscape, snowy mountains, slender waterfalls and peaceful surroundings. Glaciers surround the upper Beas area on three sides, with the highest summits up to 23,050 feet. The trek from Chanderkhani Pass to an altitude of 12,200 feet, leading to the Malana Valley is the most beautiful attraction in the region.
2) The town is spread like a leaf of a pipal tree; and takes place on the slope of the top of Han. Naggar was the capital of Kullu for about 1460 years; there is a lovely lineage that is now left behind. A classic example is that of the Naggar Castle, which was built in the 16th century, but has now been converted into a hotel with a spectacular view and a superb location. You can simply visit the property and admire its intricate wood carvings and the breathtaking views of the Kullu Valley and the surrounding forests.
About Tripura Sundari Temple of Naggar:
- Then there’s the Tripura Sundari Temple, constructed by Raja Yashodhapal. The temple is one of the simplest examples of pagoda style of architecture in Himachal. Situated only 400m from Naggar Castle, this temple is sacred to the local mother Tripura Devi. The temple has the shape of a canvas, is constructed with desolate wood, and has a three-storey tower structure with multiple eaves.
Another prominent attraction here is the Roerich Museum, which was the residency of the Russian artist, Nicholas Roerich, when he came to India in 1929. The house is nowadays an art gallery that houses many rare paintings. The house is a delightful mixture of Himalayan and Russian architecture. The rooms have a breathtaking view of the Himalayas, and it is easy to understand why he chose to breath his last here.
Last but not the least, you can walk down to the Urusvati Himalayan Folk Art Museum, which is historic in the sense it showcases the rich history of Kullu and Naggar. It displays an excellent collection of local folk art, weapons, costumes from the Kullu heritage, a number of paintings by Roerich’s Russian followers, his family photographs and a ton of other stuff.
