What is the news?
- Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur today received the torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad from Grand Master Deep Sengupta at Indian Institute of Advance Studies, Shimla.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the torch relay of the Chess Olympiad on 19th June, 2022 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. This torch will be taken to 75 cities in a span of 40 days before the final culmination at Mahabalipuram near Chennai.
What CM shared:
- Jai Ram Thakur thanked the Government of India for taking the initiative to start a new tradition of the torch relay. He said that this year, India has received the opportunity to host a Chess Olympiad.
- Today, when India is celebrating its 75th year of independence, Amrit Mahotsav, this Chess Olympiad torch will also be going to 75 cities of the country, which is historic in itself.
- Referring to the glorious history of India, the Chief Minister said that using the analytical ability, our ancestors had invented games like chess, which was now popular all over the world. Playing chess improves cognitive ability and helps in focusing towards one goal, he said.
Why important for exam?
- The 44th Chess Olympiad will be held in Chennai from 28 July to 10 August, 2022. The prestigious competition, which has been organised since 1927, is being hosted in India for the first time and in Asia after 30 years. With 189 countries participating, this will be the largest participation in any Chess Olympiad.
Whom CM handed over the torch?
- Later, the Chief Minister handed over the torch relay to Grand Master Deep Sengupta, which is set to travel to Chandigarh.

What is the news?
- Amjad-e-Saeed will be the 27th Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.
- Acting on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, the Central Government had issued a notification regarding his appointment as the new Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court on June 19.
Important Points:
- Justice Amjad A Saeed of the Bombay High Court will take over as the Chief Justice of the Himachal High Court on Thursday.
- Amjad-e-Saeed will be the 27th Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.
About High Court Chief Justice:
Article 217 of the Constitution: It states that the Judge of a High Court shall be appointed by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice of India (CJI), the Governor of the State.
- In the case of a common high court for two or more states, the governors of all the states concerned are consulted by the President.
- In the case of appointment of a Judge other than the Chief Justice, the Chief Justice of the High Court is consulted.
Consultation Process: High Court judges are recommended by a Collegium comprising the CJI and two senior-most judges.
- The proposal, however, is initiated by the Chief Justice of the High Court concerned in consultation with two senior-most colleagues.
- The recommendation is sent to the Chief Minister, who advises the Governor to send the proposal to the Union Law Minister.
- The Chief Justice of the High Court is appointed as per the policy of having Chief Justices from outside the respective States.
- The Collegium takes the call on the elevation.
