What is the news?
- A first, Himachal begins creating a DNA database.
Why important?
- Himachal Pradesh became the first state in the country to start creating a DNA database.
How will this help?
- It will be of great help in investigating heinous crimes, the identification of disaster victims and unclaimed bodies, missing persons and repeat offenders.
What software used and how it will help?
- The Directorate of Forensics Services, Junga, has procured DNA profile databasing and matching technology (Smallpond TM software from the USA) at a cost of Rs 55 lakh. It has a capacity of about 20,000 DNA profiles that can be expanded further.
- A local DNA profile information database can be created and maintained through this facility, allowing new DNA profiles to be effectively matched to existing profiles in seconds. On average, 600 cases with biological evidence come in for DNA profiling in the state annually.
- With this software, DNA profiles can be stored as a searchable database that will be extremely useful to provide investigation leads and identification of disaster victims.
- “In future, it will also come handy in keeping a check on the movement of suspicious and criminal elements across borders,” said Vivek Sahajpal, Assistant Director (DNA), Directorate of Forensics Services, Junga.

- Two IPS officers, Manav Verma and Rohit Malpani, have been selected to highlight the outstanding work done by them during Covid in Baddi police district in the All-India Police Science Congress (AIPSC), the highest professional body related to police work.
Why important?
- It is for the first time in the history of the AIPSC that the HP officers are being recognized nationally and internationally.
Who organized this?
- The science congress is organized by the Bureau of Police, Research and Development, Ministry of Home Affairs every year.
- This year, the 48th AIPSC is being organized on April 22 and 23 in the Central Academy for Police Training (CAPT), Bhopal. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the APISC while Governor of Madhya Pradesh Mangubhai Patel, will be chief guest.

What is the news?
- The government gave in-principle approval: For the first time, two Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan machines will be installed in Himachal.
Where it will be installed?
- These machines will be installed in the state’s largest health institute Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) Shimla and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Medical College Tanda (Kangra). The state government has given its in-principle approval.
How it will support?
- In this, the patient’s organ which is suffering from cancer is easily detected. Apart from this, cath labs will be set up in Hamirpur and Nahan Medical Colleges.

- Baluganj police station of Shimla first in Himachal in the ranking of CCTNS.
Shimla’s Police Station Baluganj (West) has got the first position in the state in the Thana wise ranking of Central Government’s ambitious project CCTNS. Baluganj police station has secured 28.40 marks in CCTNS ranking. SP Shimla Dr. Monika has also congratulated the Baluganj Police Station for the commendable work.
What are the parameters?
- Himachal Police has released the ranking of all the police stations in the state on the basis of crime prevention, proactive measures, anti-social elements, FIR and other parameters. Shimla’s Police Station Baluganj (West) has got the first position in the state in the Thana wise ranking of Central Government’s ambitious project CCTNS.
- Baluganj police station has secured 28.40 marks in CCTNS ranking. SP Shimla Dr. Monika has also congratulated the Baluganj Police Station for the commendable work. Sundernagar police station of Mandi district is at number two and Haroli police station of Una district is in third place.
Apart from this:
- Apart from Dhali, Jubbal and Nerwa police stations, Chawari police station of Chamba, Kasauli police station of Solan and Brau police station of Kullu district have also registered their names in the list.
- DSP Headquarters Kamal Kishore Verma said that the Crime Criminal Tracking Networking System (CCTNS) has ranked the police stations on a quarterly basis. The ranking list for the first quarter of 2022 was released on Wednesday.
- The survey covers various levels including online complaints, character verification, arm licences, missing, police station status, building, deployment of police personnel and handling and disposal of cases. Only after meeting the standards, the police stations get ranking.

What is the news?
- The revenue collection of the State Taxes and Excise Department during 2021-22 has registered an increase of 19.30 per cent at Rs 8,403.70 crore despite the pandemic.
How they achieved this?
- An official spokesperson said the increase in the revenue collection was possible due to constant efforts of the department and timely implementation of the directions of the government.
- The spokesperson said the officers of the department were given laptops and tablets due to which they were able to complete the online works such as the verification of e-way bills, ITC imbalance, refund of GST and other GST-related works and were able to generate an increase in the revenue collection in 2021-22 despite the Covid-19 outbreak.
