What is the news?
- For the construction of the Shinkula tunnel, BRO will transfer the base camp in Lahaul.
- To expedite the process of the construction of tunnels beneath the Shinkula pass on the Darcha-Shinkula- Padum-Nimmu road in the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti, the Border Roads Organization would shift its base camp from Solang to Lahaul.
About Shinku-La Tunnel:
- Shinku-La Tunnel or Shinkula Tunnel or Shingo-La Tunnel is an upcoming motorable tunnel under 16,580ft high Shinku-la pass between Himachal’s Lahaul valley and Ladakh’s Zanskar valley in Northern India.
- Ministry of Defence through Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is building Darcha-Shinkula-Padum-Nimu as an alternative road to connect Ladakh with Himachal Pradesh.

What is the news?
- The SJVN has increased its target of installed capacity from 25,000 MW to 50,000 MW by 2040.
SJVN chairman Nand Lal Sharma shared:
- This revision is the result of the addition of several projects to our portfolio and the established reputation for the operation and implementation of mega-hydro projects in India and abroad.
About SJVN:
- Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam, better known as SJVN, is an Indian public sector company involved in the production and transportation of hydropower.
- It was incorporated in 1988 as Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation, a joint venture between the Indian government and the Himachal Pradesh government.
- The company has a total operating hydropower capacity of 1912 MW through its two hydropower plants—Nathpa Jhakri and Rampur. In addition, it has an installed capacity of 97.6 MW of wind power and 6.9 MW of solar power.
- In addition to India, the SJVN also has hydroelectric projects underway in Nepal and Bhutan.
