What is the news?
- Three years later, deserving students from the 2018-20 academic sessions still expect free laptops, promised under the “Sri Nivasa Ramanujam Student Digital Yojana”. The planning department reportedly refused to provide an additional amount of Rs 25 lakh to cope with the escalation of costs.
Reason shared:
- An allowance of Rs 25 crore has been established for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 sessions for the purchase of laptops.
- The Ministry of Education needs additional funding of Rs 25 lakh to provide laptops to students in the 2019-2020 session as the cost has increased over the last two years.
- But it has been asked to scale down the configurations to bare minimum level to manage within the available budget or opt for smartphones as additional allocations were not possible in the absence of any savings,
Solution shared:
- Opt for smartphones.
- Up to 19,850 students in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 sessions are waiting for laptops because the government was unable to make a decision about their purchase. However, smartphones would be given to about 10,000 meritorious students from 2020-21, for which the tendering process is on, sources in the Education Department said.
What was the Scheme?
- The Cabinet also decided to procure and distribute 9700 laptops to the meritorious students of Class-10th and 12th under the Srinivasa Ramanujan Student Digital Yojana for the year 2017-18 and 2018-19.
