What is the news?
- Himachal: Pahari litterateur, Chamba ‘rumal’ artist gets Padma Shri.
- Two distinguished persons from Himachal, Vidyanand Sarek, a popular Pahari litterateur and Lalita Vakil, a Chamba “rumal” artist figure on the list of Padma Shri announced today.
About Vidyanand Sarek:
- Sarek, who received the national award from President Ram Nath Kovind for his contribution to folk culture in 2018, belongs to Rajgarh in Sirmaur district. The 81-year-old, a popular Pahari litterateur and folk artist, has been an important figure in the promotion of the dialect and has dedicated his life to the cause of Sirmauri culture.
- He translated 51 poems by Rabindranath Tagore within the framework of a central governmental project received by Chudeshwar Loknritya Mandal, Rajgarh.
About Lalita Vakil:
- Lalita Vakil was overwhelmed at receiving Padma Shri, the highest civilian award, for her contribution in preserving the traditional art of Chamba ‘rumal’.
About Padma Shri:
- Padma Shri , also spelled Padma Shree, is the fourth highest civil prize in the Republic of India, after Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan. It is awarded by the Government of India every year on India’s Republic Day.
Difference:
The award is given in three categories, namely,
- Padma Vibhushan for exceptional and distinguished service;
- Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high order; and
- Padma Shri for distinguished service.

What is the news?
- IGP (Southern Range) Himanshu Mishra has been awarded the President’s Police medal for distinguished service. SP, Lokayukta, Ranjama Chauhan, Additional SP, Shimla (City), Vijay Sharma, Inspector Laxman Thakur (SHO, Shimla West police station) and Assistant Sub-Inspector (CID) Jagdish Chand have been awarded police medals for meritorious services.
