What is the news?

  • CM addresses members of the Himachali Pravasi Global Association on Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas.

 

Why Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas celebrated?

  • On January 9, the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas is observed to strengthen the engagement of the Indian community overseas with the Indian government and reconnect them with their roots. It is celebrated for the contribution of Indians living overseas to the development of the land of their ancestors.

 

Why the 9 Jan selected as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas?

  • January 9 was chosen as the day to celebrate this occasion since, in 1915, Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, had returned to India from South Africa, on this day, and led the country’s Freedom Struggle which changed the lives of Indians forever.

 

The chief minister said the following statement:

  • Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur while addressing the Indians virtually on the occasion of ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas’ organized by the Himachali Pravasi Global Association from here today appreciated the Himachalis living in different parts of the world to effectively preserve the rich culture and tradition of Himachal Pradesh away from home.
  • Jai Ram Thakur stated that Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas is a day devoted to the Indian community abroad. He also urged the NRI Himachalis to come forward to be the partners in the development of the State by investing in the State.
  • He said that the people of Himachal Pradesh have created a special place for themselves in different parts of the world due to their hard work and dedication.
  • He said that despite being a small State, Himachal Pradesh has shown a way for several big States in different fields of development. He said that the State Government has organized Global Investors Meet to attract private investment in the State.
  • He said that these efforts have proved a grand success as the State Government has succeeded in getting ground breaking of projects worth about Rs. 42,000 crore in two ground breaking ceremonies held after the Global Investors Meet.
  • Chief Minister said that this event would go a long way in creating cultural bonds and an ecosystem for cultural propagation among the Diaspora. He said that Himachali Diaspora and various Diaspora associations have played a very important role in the propagation of Himachali culture in different parts of the world.
  • This event would bring together eminent Diaspora personalities and associations involved in propagation of Indian culture to discuss innovative ways of leveraging the Diaspora to enhance India’s soft power in this field, he added.
  • Jai Ram Thakur said that this webinar would bring together the Himachalis abroad to enrich knowledge, expertise, and skills to be shared in a common platform. He said that Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas plays a significant role as the overseas Indian community gets a shared platform to get themselves engaged with the government and the native people of the land.  He also thanked the Himachalis for their contribution during the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • President Himachali Pravasi Global Association Bhagya Chander, a Himachali living in Canada welcomed the Chief Minister and said that main aim of this Conference was to ensure better relations and understanding with the people of Himachal Pradesh living in different parts of the world.   Advisor-cum-Principal Private Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr R.N. Batta welcomed the delegates.
  • Arun Chauhan an Indian living in Canada, Dr Vishal Sharma living in Australia, Munish Gupta living in UAE, Arun Chauhan living in Canada, Sanjeev Sharma living in Oman, Umesh Singh Thakur living in Australia, Poonam Gularia, Sunny Kaushal New Zealand, Mamta Dohroo UK, Vishal Thakur Germany, Goldie Sharma Bahrain shared their views and steps taken by them in their respective countries to help Himachalis coming to their countries for studies and jobs etc.

  • A total of 14 films from across the globe have been shortlisted for the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR)-2022

 

What film is all about?

  • ‘Clouds Messenger’ by Nurpur’s Rahat Mahajan (in pic) is a coming-of-age story that puts together contemporary and ancient storytelling.

 

Other works:

  • His first film, ‘Memoirs of an Apple’, won the first prize at the IDPA Film Festival in 2006. He then began working in Bollywood as an assistant director with Vishal Bhardwaj and eventually led visual promotions for various films.
  • The film shows how uniform, morning call, order and disciplined life in the prestigious boarding school fail to enthuse Jaivardhan (16) who finds a temporary respite in a photography workshop.
  • The photography lessons also introduce Jaivardhan to Tarini. Their meeting proves to respond to a centuries-old desire, which refers to a classic Indian tale about tragic lovers and an evil and jealous leader.
  • As the tale unfolds, the two realized their roles as timeless lovers in a mythical tale, meeting in the present day after several centuries of longing, and leading up to the death of Tarini in this life as well.
  • As the whole universe conspires to break the ancient curse, this story of eternal love can only end if Jaivardhan journeys to the land of death.

  • The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is an annual film festival, which is held in the end of January in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
  • Since its founding in 1972, it has focused on independent and experimental film by highlighting emerging talent and established authors.
