Topic:- Elections in Colleges/Universities.

 

News:- HPU(Himachal Pradesh University) rejects the demand for direct elections.

 

Context:- Rejecting the demand of students organisations to restore direct elections to central students associations of the university and its affiliated colleges, the Registrar, Ghanshyam Chand today issued notification.

 

What notifications say?

  • As per the notification, the nominated Students Central Association (SCA) in HPU and College Students central Association (CSCA) in colleges affiliated to HPU would be formed within 10 days. The principals of the respective colleges have been directed to send the names and the list of the CSCA to the university.

 

Why demand rejected?

  • The direct elections were discontinued in 2014 in the wake of violence on the university campus. Some colleges despite strong protests by student organisations and direct elections to SCAs would not be held for the sixth time in a row.

News:- No footbridge over a rivulet, Mandi villagers allege apathy.

 

Exact Location:-

  • Thachi village falling under Mashog panchayat in Karsog Assembly segment of Mandi district.

 

What is rivulet?

  • A rivulet is a small stream. A rivulet is to a river as a baby is to an adult.

 

Major concern:-

  • The worst sufferers are students and their parents because the students have to cross the rivulet to reach school. Local people say that the situation becomes grim when the water level increases in the rivulet drastically. It poses a threat to the safety of the children, who have to cross the rivulet to reach school.
  • In the rainy season, parents accompany their children to help them cross the river. When the water level of rivulet rises too high, the students of this village fail to reach school at all.

News:-Dr Parvinder Kaushal, Vice-Chancellor, Nauni: Need to address water conservation issue and other views were expressed by experts during Kisan Mela.

 

Where Kisan Mela was organised in Solan?

  • Kisan Mela organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Solan, and Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (UHF), Nauni.

 

Who sponsored?

  • The event was organised under the Jal Shakti Abhiyaan of the Union Government(Centrally Sponsored) to create awareness about water conservation and the judicious use of water.

 

Important:-

  • Nalagarh was one of the stressed blocks recognised under the abhiyaan where there was high pressure on water resources.

 

Suggestions suggested by experts:-

  • Calling for “Per drop-more crop” approach, experts from the university exhorted the farmers to adopt the modern precision farming techniques to utilise less water for producing more food.
  • The five aspects of Jal Shakti Abhiyan – water conservation and rainwater harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies, reuse of water and recharging of structures, watershed development and intensive afforestation – were also elaborated upon at length.
