Topic: – Agriculture Infrastructure Project
What is the news?
- The Shimla Cold Chain Project is scheduled for completion by June.
Who’s going to build that?
- The Himachal Pradesh State Agricultural Marketing Board (HPSAMB) and Nabard Consultancy Services (NABCONS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the construction of a state-of-the-art integrated cold chain project.
Where is that going to be located?
- Parala and Kharapathar in Upper Shimla.
Regarding the project:-
- The project, valued at Rs 60 crore, will have an AC store and processing plant in Parala and pre-cooling rooms in Kharapathar. Furthermore, the project also includes refrigerated vans, which will transport agricultural products to various markets at controlled temperatures.
In what way will this benefit farmers?
- The installation will give farmers some control over the supply chain, especially at a time when the market does not offer profitable prices for their products. They can store at least a portion of their product and release it when prices are better.
Why significant?
- For the Marketing Board, this is the first step in serving mode. Until now, it operated in levy mode, charging fees to facilitate trade between farmers, arhtiyas and purchasers.
Regarding the Cold Chain Project:
- The target of the Scheme of Cold Chain, Value Addition and Preservation Infrastructure is to provide integrated cold chain and preservation, infrastructure facilities, without any break, from the farm gate to the consumer. It covers building infrastructure across the supply chain.
