• Professor HK Chaudhary, Vice-Chancellor, CSK HP Agriculture University, Palampur,  said he would work in close coordination with the farm scientists and the farming community of the state to achieve the best possible results.

 

Upcoming work:-

• The university will undertake new research work on high potential crops such as garlic, Kala zeera and ginger, and will also take up research on Chigu goat, Gaddi dog and poultry, with biotechnological interventions.
• To establish an Agricultural Technology Park for providing single-window solutions to the farmers.

What is the news?

• Sirmaur among top 12 districts in the race for the award.
• Selected from 958 applications for eco-friendly works by the administration.

 

What is the name of the award?

• Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration, 2020, under the “Innovation (General) — District” category for a slew of environmental protection works such as the introduction of polybricks to rid the district of plastic waste.

 

Efforts made by Sirmaur District:-

• In an effort to rid the plastic waste, about 9 tonnes of plastic had been collected so far by running ‘Ek Din School Ke Naam’, ‘Ek Din Panchayat Ke Naam’ and ‘Markanda Cleanliness Campaign’ under the polythene-free Sirmaur campaign of the district administration.

• Lahaul society to encourage potato farmers.
• The Lahaul Potato Society (LPS) is focusing on providing farmers with better prices for potato produce.

 

Reason for decline in Potato cultivation:-

• The LPS had failed to meet the expectations of potato growers.
• As a result, they had reduced the cultivation of potato in the Lahaul valley and adopted the cultivation of exotic vegetables to sustain their economy.

 

Way forward by Lahaul Potato Society (LPS):-

• To improve the quality of seed potato, the LPS has decided to adopt contract farming. We urged the potato growers to send their products in the LPS and we will make efforts to provide them with good prices for their produce
