How does the idea of the constituent assembly come into being?
- For the first time in 1934, Mr N Roy presented the idea of the Constitutional Assembly.
- JL Nehru on behalf of INC also demanded the formation of the constituent assembly
- The demand was accepted by the British government in 1940, known as August offer.
How was the constituent assembly composed?
- Total strength was 389, out of which 296 seats were assigned to british India and 93 seats to the princely states.
- Of those 296 seats, 292 came from eleven provinces represented by the governor and four from four provinces represented by the chief commissioner.
How did the constitutional assembly function?
- On December 9th, 1946 the assembly held its first meeting with 211 members. Muslim league boycotted it.
- Dr Sachchidananda Sinha elected as temporary president of the assembly.
- On December 11th 1946, Dr Rajendra Prasad was elected as permanent president and HC Mukherjee as vice president.
- On December 13th 1946, JL Nehru tabled Objective Resolution in assembly.

What were other important functions of assembly?
- Adopted National Anthem on January 24, 1950.
- Adopted National Flag on July 22nd, 1947.
- Elected Dr Rajendra Prasad as first President of India on January 24th, 1950.
- Adopted National Song on January 24th, 1950.
How long did it take before the constitution was formed?
- It took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to frame the constitution in 11 sessions.
- Total expense in forming the constitution was Rs 64 lakh.
When did the constitution come into effect?
- Last session of the constituent assembly was held on January 24th, 1950.
- The constitution was implemented fully on January 26th, 1950.
- The constituent assembly worked as provisional parliament from January 26th, 1950 till firat general elections 1951-52.
Why January 26th?
- January 26th was selected as the date of commencement of the constitution because on this day in 1930 Purna Swaraj day was celebrated.
