Where is this place?
- Jakhu temple is one of the ancient and most religious places, must be encountered by every visitor situated at the topmost point of Shimla nearly 2.5 km /1.3 miles east of the Ridge, which takes almost 15-20 minutes to travel, the distance even depends on the mode which the tourist choice for as per their convenience.
Why is it named Jhaku Temple?
- Jakhu is a derivative of the YAKKSA Hindu word.
- is the mythological character in Hindu mythology, which are a link between humans and gods. The original dates of the temple is not known, but it is believed to exist from the time of the Ramayana, a prehistoric event according to ancient Hindu texts.
- The Jakhu Hill is the highest peak around Shimla and is famous for its trekking options.
- The Jakhu Hill offers excellent views of the sunrise, sunset, mountains and the town. The hill is full of narrow paths & roads which are an enjoyable walk. Overall, it’s a lovely hill around Shimla with some amazing views.

- The Jakhu Temple of Shimla’s dedicated to God, Hanuman, where the entire temple is surrounded by its central resemblance.
- Jakhu Temple has great religious significance and many devotees of Hanuman come and visit the place due to the inherent facts and myths which connect to the realm of this place. It has a hidden legend that makes this place more supreme and distinctive that enrich each devotee’s thought.
How is this place holy?
- This place has prints of Hanuman since it is said that a deadly arrow wounded Lakshmana, brother of Lord Rama while fighting with the demon King Ravana. Hence, in order to save Lakshmana the priest said that he needs some specific kind of herb i.e. Sanjeevani but from the great Himalayas, which can only save Lakshmana, after diagnosing him. Therefore, to save him, Lord Hanuman took effort and he was sent to get the Sanjeevani Butti, but he was unable to find the herb, hence he pick the whole mountain and brings the entire mountain and flew back to Lakshmana.
- After that he was completely cured, so Lord Hanuman, returned to keep this mountain back in its original place. After that he lied there and rest for some time at the top of the hill known as Jakhu, hence, it is universally accepted that Lord Hanuman put its footprints there, hence due to this belief priests have built a temple there which now universally known as Jakhu Temple. The mountain peak has a flattened shape since it is believed that due to Lord Hanuman weight the top of the hill got flattened.

Jakhoo Temple Ropeway:
- The fantastic Gondola ride rises to 8,054 feet above sea level and covers the distance of half a kilometre in not more than 5-6 minutes, thereby sparing you of the usual human congestion on the roads. The Jakhoo ropeway is one of the four major ropeway attractions in the state, with the other being – Solang Nala at Rohtang, Naina Devi in Bilaspur and Timber Trial in Solan. Each ropeway cabin can carry six people.
Dussehra Celebrations:
- The festival of Dussehra (Vijayadashami) is celebrated on a grand scale during the month of October/September at the Jakhoo Temple because of Lord Hanuman’s heroic feats in the Hindu epic, Ramayana. Dussehra marks the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana.

- Shri Hanuman Jakhu is a statue located in the premises of the temple that is one of the tallest in the world.
- A giant 108-feet-high idol of Hanuman was unveiled at the Jakhu Hanuman temple on 4 November 2010. At 108 feet (33 m), it surpasses the statue of Christ the Redeemer, which measures at 98 feet (30 m), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Who inaugurated this Shri Hanuman Statue?
- Its construction was started in 2008 and completed in the year 2010, inaugurated by Abhishek Bachchan, his sister Shweta Nanda, her husband Nikhil Nanda a business tycoon and the then Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Prem Kumar Dhumal. The statue is 108 feet tall and overlooks the city of Shimla.

- By Air: The nearest airport to the temple is Shimla Airport, located in Jubbarhatti, around 23 km from the temple.
- By Rail: The nearest train station is in Shimla, 2 km from Jakhoo Temple.
- By Road: Travelling by car/bus is the best option to travel to the Jhaku temple because of the wonderful road connectivity and a good frequency of public as well as private buses.
