Art and Architecture of Arki Fort:
- It presents a fusion of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles and shows a heavy influence of Rajasthan. The beautiful murals and frescoes done in the ‘Pahari School’ of miniature paintings were later added by Raja Kishen Chand in 1850. These frescoes are said to be the most accurate record of the contemporary lifestyle in the nearby hills of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. They can broadly be classified as decorative floral designs, paintings that present pure fantasies straight from the artists’ minds and paintings inspired by the scenic beauty of the hills.
- The murals and frescoes on the walls, ceilings and pillars of the Diwan e Khas are a sight to behold. What makes it intriguing is that there are several paintings depicting scenes from European cities of yore.
What is Diwan-i-Khaas?
- Situated at an altitude of 1200 m, Diwan-i-Khas, also known as the Audience Hall, is a prominent tourist location in Arki, Solan District. It was built in 1830 by Ram Shara Singh, an Arki ruler and a well-known patron of the arts. The Diwan-i-Khas is adorned with wall paintings in the Kangra, Rajasthani, Arki, Kullu and European styles. The drawings of flowers and small statues of females in the hall exhibit the strong influence of the Guler style. Chinese pictures, Punjabi folk art, raginis, erotic scenes of love, war scenes, animals, birds and stories from the Puranas are the subjects of the mural paintings present in the Diwan-i-Khas. All the pieces of art present in the hall are the perfect testaments of the rich artistic heritage of Arki.
