Temples and Monasteries of LAHAUL & SPITI District

 

 

Mrikula Devi Temple

  • Place: Udaipur
  • Roof: Pent roof /Naggar style
  • Built by: Raja Ajay Varman in 10th or 11th century
  • Dedicated to Mata Kali

 

Trilokinath temple

  • Place: Udaipur
  • Roof: Shikhar style (the only Shikhar style in Lahaul)
  • Built by: Dvanjra, Rana of Udaipur with the help of Raja Sahil Varman in 10th century.
  • The ancient name of the temple is ‘Tunda Vihara’.
  • Hindu consider Trilokinath as Lord Shiva and Buddhist as Avalokiteshwar.
  • Most sacred after Kailash Mansarovar.

 

Tabo Monastery

  • Place: Spiti
  • Built by: The Great Lotsaba Rinchen Sangpo in 996 AD.
  • The oldest monastery in the world.
  • Also known as Ajanta of Himalayas.
  • Chakhar festival is celebrated here every 4 years.

 

Guru Ghantal Gompa

  • Place: Lahaul
  • Built by: Guru Padamsambhav
  • One of 84 sidhs of Buddhist had performed tapasaya here.
  • Oldest Gompa of Lahaul
  • Ghantal fair held every year in June
  • There is also an idol of Brajeshwari Devi in the Gompa.

 

Key Monastery

  • Place: Kibber village, Spiti, close to the Spiti River.
  • Biggest monastery of Spiti Valley and a religious training centre for lamas.
  • Founded by Dromtön.
  • Kye monastery has a collection of ancient murals and books, including Buddha images.

 

Sashur Monastery

  • Place: Keylong, Lahaul
  • Built-in the 17th century by Lama Deva Gyatsho.
  • This monastery has large Thangka paintings, some of them over fifteen feet, and wall paintings depicting all the 84 siddhas of Buddhism.
