Which university claims to have developed new sustainable substitutes for obtaining chemicals from non-petroleum resources?
- Shoolini University.
Vice-Chancellor, PK Khosla, said:-
- A research group from the School of Chemistry headed by Dr Neeraj Gupta has recently developed a metal-free catalyst for the hydrogenation of alkenes.
Important:-
- This study was published in the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) journal, which is among the top 10 global journals in the field of catalysis.
- the group is also trying to isolate chemicals from plant waste, such as fallen leaves of pine or its bark to make important chemicals that are currently derived from the petroleum industry only.
Who funded this project?
- The project is funded by Himachal Pradesh Council of Science Technology and Environment.
What help this project will provide?
- The process, if developed on a large scale, will open the gateway to replace the petroleum industry with new bio-refineries. The concept was recognized internationally and the work was highlighted in journals published by reputed publishers.

What is the news?
- Woman SHG boosts self-employment.
- There are 495 woman self-help groups (SHGs) in 43-gram panchayats of the Nurpur development block in Kangra district but Shri Lakshmi Self Group in Khel gram panchayat has set an example of generating good self-employment opportunities by availing of the benefits of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM).
Loans available:-
- The beneficiaries can avail bank loan of Rs3 to 10 lakh with a low-interest rate. At present, 4,230 rural women are connected with different woman self-help groups in Nurpur.
