What is the news?
- An award in the name of Amritsar-born engineer in Jharkhand’s IIT-ISM.
Why?
- Jaswant Singh Gill risked his life to save 65 miners trapped in a coal mine.
Award:-
- The management of the Indian Institute of Technology/ Indian School of Mining (IIT-ISM), a premier institute in Dhanbad, (Jharkhand) has announced a national award in the name of an Amritsar-based engineer Jaswant Singh Gill posthumously.
Name of the award:-
- “Jaswant Singh Gill Memorial Industrial Safety Excellence Award”, it carries award money of Rs 50,000.
Earlier, he was awarded ‘Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak’ by President of India in November 1991.

- Minority students can apply online for scholarships now onwards.
- Online applications have been sought from eligible students for pre-matric, post-matric and merit-cum-means based scholarships for the youth belonging to minorities of Punjab.
Who can avail the benefits?
- Youth belonging to Sikh, Muslim, Buddhist, Parsi, Jain and Christian communities in the state could avail the benefits of these schemes for 2020-2021.
Eligibility Criteria:-
- Students who have secured at least 50 per cent marks in the previous examination will be eligible for the scholarship.
