News:- Sukhdeep Kaur has become the First baptized woman to be appointed as the prison officer in Hong Kong.

  • She hails from Bhuchar Khurd village in Tarn Taran district of Punjab.
  • She is well versed in the Cantonese ( the Chinese dialect spoken in Hong Kong region).
  • There are approximately 12000 Sikhs in Hong Kong.

 

Significance of her appointment:-

  • It shows the talent of the immigrant Punjabi people.
  • It also reveals the multicultural value system prevailing in the Hong Kong region.
  • Sukhdeep Kaur’ s inclination towards religious values also shows the resilience of Indian religion and culture.
  • It is also a good precedent for improving people to people contacts between India and Hong Kong.

 

Concerns:-

  • The scale of immigration does not bode well for Punjab as it is losing its young population at a rapid pace.
  • People’ s penchant to move abroad highlights weak economic structure prevailing in the country.

News:- Kirpal Kazak, Punjab’ s  Verrier Elwin honoured.

 

  • Sahitya Akademi Award has been given to Kirpal Kazak for his work, ANTHEEN ( endless) – a collection of short stories.
  • He has spent various years with nomadic tribes, conducting Researches into various aspects of their life.
  • He had also worked for the magazine of Amrita Pritam, Nagmani.
  • He had also worked with the engineering department of Punjabi University as a mortar mate.
  • But soon, he found himself in the services of the literary department or studies of the Punjabi University.
  • He has worked with the nomadic tribes of Punjab and other states.
  • The tribes such as Sikligars and Gadi Lohars of Punjab have been studied deeply by Kazak.
  • He thoroughly studied their cultural traits and obtained first-hand information about the tribals by living among them.
  • He has also worked on Santhals of Jharkhand and Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • For his contribution to the Anthropology of Punjab, he is often compared with the British born anthropologist, Verrier  Elwin.
