  •  A government medical college to be established at Kapurthala
  • The union has given the approval for establishing a Government Medical College (GMC) at Kapurthala.
  • Besides, a local civil hospital would also be upgraded.
  • The GMC would be set up at a cost of rupees 325 crores.
  •  The state would contribute around 40% of the amount for the project.
  • This GMC project would be first of its type in the Doaba region.
  • It would provide a boost to medical education as well as the quality infrastructure in the state.
  • At present, there are only three medical Colleges in Punjab namely at – Amritsar, Faridkot and Patiala.

News:- Ludhiana district is the worst affected in terms of Tuberculosis ( in Punjab).

 

 

Background: National TB control program has come up with a report, which has revealed some startling facts.

 

  • The report covers the time period from January to October (2019).
  • It has highlighted that around 49060 cases have been recorded in Punjab this year.

 

Whereas the number of cases in previous years was:-

  • 2018 – 54401.
  • 2017- 45313.

 

And from Ludhiana alone, 12,633 cases have been reported.

 

Four districts carry the burden of having around 55% of the disease in the state. These districts are:-

  • Amritsar.
  • Ludhiana
  • Patiala
  • Jalandhar.

 

The reasons for the high incidence of this disease in these four districts are:-

  • These districts have a huge migrants population, who are often the victims of this disease.
  • Better quality of health infrastructure, due to which the number of cases reported is more here.
  •  Besides, TB is a notifiable disease. It means that both government and private hospitals will have to report the cases to the government.
  • Moreover, around 37000 cases of the total 49000  have come from government hospitals.

 

Some other facts report have highlighted are:-

  • Over 700 cases of multidrug-resistant TB cases have also been found in the state.
  • TB is one of the biggest killers in the state’ s jails. ( As found by the forensic department of the Amritsar Medical College).
  • Over the oast two years, around 22 deaths were caused due to TB.
  • Also, the Health department had started the initiative of sending field workers to the TB patients houses.
  • It seeks to establish a personal correspondence between the patients and the health department.

News:-Honourable Punjab and Haryana High court gets its first all-women Bench

  • This has happened for the very first time since the Court was set up almost a century ago.
  • The total number of women Judges in the Punjab and Haryana High court has gone to 10.
  • The Chief Justice had administered the oath to six officers from Punjab and Haryana.
  • Justice Daya Chaudhary, who heads the division bench, was the first woman advocate to be administered oath as a Punjab and Haryana High court judge in 2007.
  • Although, the number of judges in the High Court has gone up to 56. But, the sanctioned strength is 85.
  • So, a huge pendency of cases exists due to this Understaffing of the High and lower levels of the judiciary.
