News:- Punjab witnessed the highest number of suicides in its jails
Report by NCRB:-
- National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has reported that Punjab has recorded the highest number of unnatural deaths and suicides in its jails. (Even though it is ranked 14 in terms of jail inmates).
- Of the 109 suicides in prisons, Punjab reported the highest number-13
- Punjab also saw the high number of transfer of jail inmates outside the state.
- Punjab is also known for liberal paroles.
- The number of escapes of jail inmates from judicial or police custody is also high.

Why?
- IIT Ropar has performed well in Research related capacity and documents publications.
- E.g. it has scored 94.7 points in Citation per paper.
- And 70.2 points in paper per faculty.

News:-Punjab accounts for the maximum drug smuggling cases
Report by NCRB:-
- NCRB has reported that Punjab has the highest number of drug smuggling cases.
- It has over 1/4 th of the total drug traffickers caught in the country in 2017.
- Maharashtra has reported the highest of FIRs under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). Punjab is in 2nd place.
- Around 47% of the FIRs in Punjab were against drugs smuggling and 53% were against the cases of drug consumption.
- Though States like Maharashtra are mainly the consumer of drugs but Punjab is both the consumer and trafficker.
- Earlier the Punjab government had formed a Special Task Force to curb the drugs issue.
