News:- Bandaru Dattatreya: replaces Mishra as Governor.

Kalraj Mishra succeeds Kalyan Singh in Rajasthan; has the shortest tenure in Himachal Pradesh.

 

Important fact:-

• Of 19 Governors, who adorned Raj Bhawan since January 25, 1971, when Himachal was granted statehood, 16 Governors, including Kalraj Mishra, did not complete their full term and were either shifted, removed or resigned.

 

About new Governor  Bandaru Dattatreya:-

• Born on February 26, 1947, in Hyderabad, four-time MP from Secunderabad, Dattatreya was a Union minister in Vajpayee govt in 1998 and 1999
• He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1991, 1998, 1999 and 2014 but lost in 2004 and 2009 and did not contest the 2019 polls
• After his re-election to the Lok Sabha in 2014 from Telangana, he was inducted as Minister of State for Labour and Employment in the BJP government headed by Narendra Modi.

 

About GOVERNORS OF STATES:-

• There shall be a Governor for each State:
• Provided that nothing in this article shall prevent the appointment of the same person as Governor for two or more States.

 

APPOINTMENT OF GOVERNOR:-

• The Governor of a State shall be appointed by the President by warrant under his hand and seal.
• The President is bound to act on the aid and advice of the Council of Ministers under Article 74 of the Constitution, in effect, it is the central government that appoints and removes the Governors. “Pleasure of the President” merely refers to this will and wish of the central government.

News:-Electoral verification programme launched.

 

Context:-Chief Electoral Officer Devesh Kumar today launched an electoral verification programme by releasing a poster pertaining to the verification process here today.

 

Purpose:-

• Election Commission of India (ECI) had decided to launch an electoral verification programme to avoid duplication of entries in the voter’s list. The booth level App will be launched by the ECI in a day or two.

 

Who will execute this?

• This would be operated by a booth-level officer who will testify all the credentials of voters through the App. The booth-level officer will visit every house to upload the voters’ information on the booth-level App, which would also help in the removal of discrepancies in the voters’ list.

 

Who launched this?

• The Election Commission of India.

News:-    Subtropical project to raise farm income

With 2.3 lakh hectare under horticulture, fruit production may rise to 10.38 lakh MT this year.

 

How?

• Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded the project to develop subtropical fruits in the state, which would help the double income of farmers in the near future.

 

Role of Horticulture in HP Economy:-

• Horticulture contributes about Rs3,000-Rs5,000 crore annually to the state economy involving 9 lakh people for their livelihood.

 

Other Schemes for horticulture:-

• Under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), Rs3.50 crore has been approved for the various developmental activities in the horticulture sector under the present government. As many as 1,61,524 farmers have been covered under the Restructured-Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS) implemented in 2017-18.
