News:- Swan river (Sutlej tributary) floods dozen Ropar villages due to rise in water level.
About Swan River:-
- Swan River, a tributary of Sutlej river.
- Its origins in Una (Himachal Pradesh).
- It is a seasonal river flows 65 km right across the Jaswan Valley towards the south until it submerges in the Sutlej river near algran village in Anandpur Sahib(Ropar District).
Why the flood occurred?
- During monsoon season, around 10,000 cusecs of water flow in the swan river.
- Yesterday,35000 cusecs of water flow recorded in the Sutlej while 49000 cusecs in the Swan due to heavy rains in its catchment areas.
(Cusec is a measure of flow rate and is informal shorthand for “cubic feet per second” (28.317 litres per second). In the United States it is generally applied to water flow, particularly in rivers and canals).
Previous Impact:-
Loss of Crops and Village infrastructure as villagers have been facing weather vagaries since 2010 when 1000 feet stretch of Lodhipur bundh was damaged in floods(river crossed from this bundh).
Government initiative:-
- According to the survey conducted by “DIRECTORATE OF IRRIGATION AND POWER RESEARCH, Amritsar” in 2011, on the flow of rivers and its impact in the area. On the basis of the survey, a proposal to construct a new bundh at lodhipur(cost 13.43 cr) was submitted to the government but no action.
Solutions:-
- Construction of channels to diverge excess water.
- Prevent encroachment at river banks.
