What is the news?
- Himachal Pradesh Police have implemented a robust trial management system in response to the large number of murder cases pending in courts.
Sanjay Kundu, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Himachal Pradesh, stated:
- The system, which was launched earlier this month, requires the DGP to personally review the status of murder cases on a weekly basis during Monday meetings.
How will it work?
- The police will also ensure that witnesses in murder cases testify in court on time under the new system.
- During the Monday meetings, it will also be reviewed how many police officers and private citizens who are witnesses in murder cases are appearing in court for testimony, according to DGP.
- The DGP said that crime rate analysis done by the police reveals that 974 murder cases have been registered in Himachal Pradesh in last 10 years.
- On an average, nearly 98 murder cases are registered every year. After completing the investigation, the chargesheet of these cases were presented by the police in respective courts for trial within a period of 90 days.

What is the news?
- The Mugla Vikas Samiti of Chamba town has urged the district administration to prioritise the conservation of the town’s five chowgans.
- In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, Samiti president Hari Ram Puri stated that the government had designated five Chowgans as “heritage sites” due to their historical significance. As a result, the seriousness of the cause should be demonstrated, and planting of ‘drub,’ a local grass, should be ensured to restore their pristine glory.
- The former rulers of Chamba state must have worked extremely hard to establish five Chowgans. These Chowgans are the town’s lungs and heart. Chamba is famous for its beautiful Chowgans.The district administration earns fabulous income from these Chowgans during the Minjar fair every year.
About Chamba Chaugan:
- The Chaugan is the heart and hub center of all activity in Chamba. According to Dr. J. Hutchison, “ The town is built on two terraces. On the lower is the Chaugan a fine grassy sward, about a half a mile long by eighty yards broad.
- Tradition is silent as to its use as a polo ground and the name is etymologically distinct from Chaugan, the Persian name of Polo, being of Sanskrit origin and meaning ‘four-sided; Besides being a public promenade and recreation-ground, the Chaugan was utilized for State Darbars and sports”.
- These large spaces are unique of their vastness in a hill station. Initially the five Chaugans were a single patch of meadow which was used for purpose mentioned above. In the 1890 the leveling of chaugan was done.
- It become a public promenade and Cricket ground for the British. Annual Minjar Mela is held in the Chaugan when most of it is converted into a Bazaar. Local people including men, women and children can be seen promenading in the chaugan till late night.
- During summer many families bring food from home to chaugan and dine in open air. A large number of people can also be seen sleeping during night in the chaugan. Gaddies with their dears can also be seen camping on the outsidrats of this beautiful public promenade. Chaugan is closed for public after Dushera to April to carryout maintenance.

What is the news?
- DC Raghav Sharma has stated that dragon fruit cultivation in the district will be encouraged in order to increase farmers’ income.
- In a press release issued today, he stated that the exotic fruit fetched a high market price, and that the climate of the district was suitable for cultivation, as discovered during field trials last year.
- Last year, 3,784 dragon fruit saplings were planted on 1.72 hectares in 14 gramme panchayat areas of Bangana subdivision by 43 progressive farmers, according to Sharma.
- He said the growth and progress of the plants was found to be good, adding that the cultivation of dragon fruit would also be promoted in other subdivisions of Una, Gagret, Haroli and Amb.
Cultivation of dragon fruit would also be promoted under which scheme?
- The DC further said the cultivation of dragon fruit would also be promoted under the MNREGA scheme in panchayats. “Interested farmers can contact their respective gram panchayats. Modalities to work out the distribution of plants under the MNREGA is being worked out,” he added.

- A gastritis outbreak in around ten villages of the district’s five gramme panchayats of Nadaun subdivision today has reportedly infected more than 350 locals.
