What is the news?

  • It is likely that Kangra tea will be assigned the European Union Geographic Indication (GI) Tag.

 

A spokesperson of the Agriculture Department said:

  • He said that the subject of Tea Cultivation and Development was transferred from the Industries Department to the Agriculture Department in April, 1999. Since then, various measures have been taken to improve tea growing in the state, especially in Kangra.
  • Kangra Tea was accorded the GI tag in India in 2005.
  • The spokesperson said that at present, the development and cultivation of Kangra Tea are being promoted and looked after by four departments, namely the Tea Board of India Regional office Palampur, cooperative & agriculture departments of the state, CSIR, IHBT Palampur and Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Agriculture University, Palampur.
  • He said that more than one lakh plants were supplied to tea producers in FY 2021-22 and an area of 5.6 hectares was put under cool planting. The department is providing the tea plants to growers both for the existing gardens and also for fresh plantations.
  • The department is also organizing the awareness programs to impart the latest technical know-how being developed by the research institutes in the field of tea cultivation.

 

What is the advantage of registering GIs?

  • It gives legal protection to GIs in India.
  • Prevents unauthorized use of a Registered Geographical Indication by others.
  • It offers legal protection to Indian geographical indications, which stimulates exports.

What is the news?

  • Hamirpur bags top spot for Adarsh Gram Yojana execution.

 

Important Points:

  • Hamirpur district has bagged the first spot in the country for the successful implementation of welfare and infrastructure development schemes under the Adarsh Gram Yojana.
  • Significantly, 17 villages of the district were identified to be covered under the scheme and the district administration executed the task in collaboration with representatives of gram Panchayats.
  • It scored 38 points out of 40 to grab the top rank.
  • These villages were provided road connectivity and pavers were fixed in the streets. The component also included the installation of streetlights.
  • Debasweta Banik, DC, said 17 villages were identified in different development blocks — 10 in Bhoranj, three each in Sujanpur and Nadaun and one in Barsar block.

About Adarsh Gram Yojana :

  • Sunshade Adarsh Gram Yojana is a rural development program broadly focusing upon the development in the villages which includes social development, cultural development and spread motivation among the people on social mobilization of the village community.

What is the news?

  • NABARD: 90 lakhs given to promote handloom in Saroa village of Mandi.
  • Officer-in-Charge, NABARD Dr. Sudhanshu KK Mishra informed that as part of efforts to promote sustainable employment opportunities in the handloom sector in the state, NABARD Himachal Pradesh has initiated market literacy for the formation and nurturing of Non-Agriculture Producer Organizations on handlooms in Saroa village of Mandi. And an amount of Rs 90 lakh 11 thousand has been approved as grant-in-aid to Jan Vikas Samiti.

 

Important Points:

  • Under this, artisan Blanket (pattu), muffler, shawl, straw will be produced. Efforts will also be made for product and design diversification.

What is the news?

  • India – Kyrgyzstan Joint Special forces Exercise Concludes at Bakloh.

 

Important Points:

  • India and Kyrgyzstan carried out a two-week-long wargame involving their special forces in reflection of growing defence ties between the two countries.
    The exercise at Bakloh in Himachal Pradesh concluded recently.
  • Over the past two weeks, special forces contingents from India and Kyrgyzstan shared their expertise and best practices of tactics, techniques and procedures to counter existing and emergent threats across the entire spectrum of conflict.
  • Combat shooting, sniping, survival in mountains, hostage rescue drills and unarmed combat were practiced extensively during the Exercise.
    Besides sharing special skills and techniques between participating Special Forces contingents, the joint training further strengthened the existing bond between India and Kyrgyzstan that has fostered over years of mutual respect for strategic autonomy, democratic values and zero tolerance for terrorism.
